Hi Paul,
I was surfing the wonderful world wide web out of utter boredom brought about by my temporary internship and I came across your site. I noticed that you have a section of comments left by people that share our unique last name. So I thought I'd contribute.

I was born in Russia, so technically my real name is Pavel Birman, however, I changed it to Paul Birman upon emigrating to America. I am currently the last Birman in my family tree and the last hope for this name to be carried on. Better have lots of boys, eh?! :)

From what I've learned through my family tree, the last name has been carried on from Austria. My great-great grandfather is the farthest we could trace, since most of the records were destroyed during the soviet regime. He moved to Budhapest and had several children who were later executed (some in the concentration camps and some in by Stalin). One of his children, Stepan Pavlovich Birman, became a revolutionary leader in Vienna and started numerous communist channels prior to the 1917 revolution.

He met with both Lenin and Stalin on many occasions, pictures of which are treasured by my family. As a politician, he was widely accepted by the citizens of Vienna, who named a small, but prominent street, called "Birman Square". The name was changed in 1991. In 1936, Stepan Pavlovich Birman was executed by Stalin. The "official" cause of death was recorded as "an infection of a wound caused by a rusted nail." He is currently buried in Moscow, next to Stalin's first wife, Nadezhda. There are a few descendants of his living in Europe, primarily in Budhapest, . My grandfather is currently residing in Austria, he was his only son.

I hope that this makes it to your comments section of the website. Thanks for your time.

Sincerely,

Paul Birman
