Congregation Tifereth Israel Goes to Sea

"It was a cold and windy night...." That's how bad novels used to start, but for Congregation Tifereth Israel the weather did not inhibit the merrymaking aboard the Peconic River Queen as 75 members and guests gathered for our 101st anniversary bash.  The faux sternwheel riverboat made its way out into the Peconic bays as the celebrants cruised the silent auction, enjoyed adult beverages and a sumptuous buffet.

The Congregation honored its own.  Edythe and Harold Winters received the Congregation Honors for their untiring service to the synagogue.  Their children were represented by son Steven who flew in from Louisville KY for the occasion.  Edythe and Harold were later seen dancing the evening away to the sounds of the disco.  Audrey and Bob Rothman made the Citizen of the Year presentation to their good friends Adele and Jim Rich who were joined by son Tom, down from Rhode Island.  The Riches were honored for a lifetime of community service.

The 101st Journal was distributed to all attendees.  Running 64 pages plus covers, it contained 49 pages of paid advertising, including six pages of the popular new business-card format.  Many many thanks to those who solicited the advertisers - with special thanks to that one-woman whirlwind, Ethel Brown - and to those who supported the congregation with their advertising.

Altogether, between the journal, the dinner and the silent auction, the congregation met its financial goals for the affair. Many thanks go to Joan Prager and Madelyn Rothman for assuming the responsibility for planning and executing this signature affair and to Ida Kaplan who organized the invitations and the seating.   Special mentions are in order for Rosemarie Birman and Sara Bloom who kept track of the advertising and the finances.
