Congregation Tifereth Israel
presents a check to the Greenport Fire
Department to honor the fire service in the wake of the
9-11 attack on our country.

Monies were donated last year during the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur appeal.

At a ceremony July 17th 2002, Congregation Tifereth Israel President, Aaron Novick presented a check for $1800 to Greenport Fire Department Chief Wayde Manwaring as the First Assistant Chief, Peter Harris and Second Assistant Chief, Michael Verity, look on.

The funds were raised from appeals made during the 2001 High Holy Days in the immediate aftermath of the September 11th attack on our country.  The congregation debated the disposition of the monies and eventually decided that a donation to the local Greenport Fire Department would be most appropriate.

The text of the letter that accompanied the donation is reproduced below.

July 2002

Chief Wayde T. Manwaring
GREENPORT FIRE DEPARTMENT
236 Third Street
Greenport, NY 11944

Dear Chief Manwaring,

The tragic effects of the Sept. 11 attack on our country forever will remain in our collective consciousness.  Nevertheless, our nation, the families of those lost in this senseless act, and all of us who live here amid the protections of the North Fork are learning to cope with the aftermath.

One of the messages of Sept. 11th, however, the message honed as we sat glued to our television set in the days immediately following the event, is that the men and women of the fire services possess the training, the skills, the character, and the compassion necessary to deal with emergency situations, whether these emergencies are in our own neighborhoods or are of global importance.

Mindful of the help available to us through our local fire department, and in commemoration of the inestimable contributions of the fire service throughout the days, weeks and months that followed Sept. 11, the members of Congregation Tifereth Israel have agreed to donate the proceeds of our annual fundraising effort to the Greenport Fire Department.  We are hopeful that these funds will help further the department's training programs and to provide protective gear and firefighting equipment for its personnel.

The brethren and families of the fire service lost on Sept. 11th are in our prayers.

With all good wishes and kindest regards,

Aaron Novick,
President
